This Berks County company will help keep you from losing your COVID-19 mask

Mark Abrams/KYW Newsradio PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A company that provides ID badges and lanyards to schools and hospitals has come up with a simple way for people keep track of masks used to protect against the coronavirus.The IRIS Companies sell photo-ID cards and the machines to make them, as well as clips, chains and custom lanyards. The Berks County company supplies such clients as the School District of Philadelphia, St. Joseph’s University, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles.Dave Gehris, their chief operating officer, said a school district in the state of Indiana recently asked the company for a solution to help students keep tabs on their masks this fall.Gehris said his staff developed an open-ended lanyard with clips on both sides to attach to the ear straps of the face mask.“Once I put my face mask onto this lanyard, I never have to take it off,” explained Gehris. “So, it eliminates lost masks. Quite frankly, it’s more of a safety issue as well. Eagles' Pederson tests positive for COVID-19

"Because we’ve been doing it for a while, this is nothing new for us. This goes back three and four years ago. We’ve all been pretty much the coordinators. So, if something happens, or we lose a guy, we’ll all step in and continue the job.”A statement from the Eagles also indicated that everyone who came in close contact with Pederson at the facility has been notified and will continue with daily testing and following protocol before coming back to the Novacare Complex.According to SportsRadio 94WIP, the Eagles can start holding walk-throughs Monday, but the team won’t ramp up practicing until later this month.

All workouts and games at Citizens Bank Park were halted, and the Phillies' weekend series against the Blue Jays was postponed, after a coach and home clubhouse staffer tested positive for COVID-19.The earliest the Phillies would be able to play again is Sunday. Former Phils General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says the team will have a tough road ahead if they can return. "They’re clearly at a disadvantage, and I feel badly for the Phillies. They’re put in a really tough situation and not just tough physically, but mentally as well," he said. "It’s gonna be a difficult situation for them to play catchup." Former Four Seasons chef launches hot sauce business during pandemic

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The coronavirus pandemic has stopped many businesses, especially restaurants, from operating, but for Jacob Trinh, it had the opposite effect.The former Four Seasons chef recently opened his new business, Trinh Eats, which specializes in hot sauces and condiments.“I've been actually thinking about this for a while and I've been playing around with the recipes and everything. COVID was just a launch point for me, almost like a kick in the butt,” he said.Prior to the pandemic, he worked at Vernick Fish in the brand new Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia atop the Comcast Center. He left when the coronavirus first shut down the restaurant — he was burnt out from the long hours on the job anyway. Fortunately, his new venture has reinvigorated his love of cooking. Trinh creates small-batch hot sauces and condiments, particularly, his XO Sauce.“XO Sauce is a classic Chinese condiment that originated from Hong Kong,” he explained. “It's made up of seafood — primarily scallop, shrimp and crab — cooked down with ginger, garlic, carrots, and shallots, with oil, chiles. It's used as a table condiment. Rising new cases of COVID-19 won’t stop Philly pre-K from in-person reopening

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Despite the rising numbers of new COVID-19 cases, Philadelphia’s prekindergarten program will resume this fall in person.The director of pre-K operations, Chante Brown, said providers will have to follow the Health Department’s guidance, which includes masks for all, social distancing and new cleaning protocols, as well as submit rigorous safety plans.“The reopening plan, the cleaning plan, all of that must be submitted and is vetted by our entire team, including our child care health consultant,” Brown explained. Rising new cases of COVID-19 won’t stop Philly pre-K from in-person reopening Brown said only four agencies have dropped out, leaving 130 locations for 3,300 open seats.Mayor Kenney said he’s proud the program is continuing.“We just can’t allow the pandemic to take safe, quality learning experiences away from our children, especially at the most critical stage in their development,” he said. Enrollment is opening just as the School District of Philadelphia halted its plan to resume in-person classes in September and opted to start the year online.Health Commissioner Tom Farley said the smaller setting in pre-K and younger age of the children makes the risk lower, though it doesn’t eliminate it. Farley also said the city has seen improvement in compliance with the mask requirement. Monitors have been posted at SEPTA stations and outside retail stores to measure what percent of people are wearing masks, and it’s gone from 60% at the start of the effort in June, to, currently, 76%. “Most people are doing the right thing but not quite enough. I would love to get it to 90%, so we just need to get the people who are not quite doing this yet to be using masks,” he said.
